"ENCOUNTER BY MOONLIGHT"
From an original by Edward Ash
On the night of 12th June 1944, a force of one hundred and seventeen Lancasters and four Mosquito 'pathfinders' carried out a raid on Poitiers, an important railway marshalling yard, used to supply the German army in Normandy.
Seventeen Lancasters from 106 squadron based at RAF Metheringham took part, bombing from heights between 5,500 and 10,000 feet.
An encounter with an ME110 'Shrage Musik' equipped night fighter thankfully came to nothing.
